Getting started with VRChat

For anyone about to start VRChat: what you can play on, what to do first, and a few things that make the first days easier. You don't need a VR headset to begin.

Written in November 2026. Screens and names in VRChat may change.

What you can play on

  • A VR headset

A Meta Quest works on its own. Connect it to a gaming PC and you can also use PC-only worlds and avatars.

  • A PC

Play without a headset, with a keyboard and mouse (desktop mode). Install it from Steam.

  • A phone

There are apps for Android and iPhone too. Some worlds and avatars don't support phones.

Your first steps

  1. Make an account

Make a VRChat account on the official VRChat website. You can also sign in with Steam or Meta, but a VRChat account lets you use the same account on any device.

  2. Install the app

On Quest, get it from the Meta Horizon Store. On PC, get it from Steam. It is free.

  3. Pick an avatar

At first you choose from the avatars VRChat provides. Open the avatar list in the menu and pick one you like.

  4. Get used to the controls

You start in your Home world. Try moving, opening the menu, and turning your mic on and off.

  5. Go where people are

Visit a world made for newcomers, or join a friend. Having someone show you around helps you settle in fast.

Good to know early

Instances
The same world is split into separate rooms called instances. Anyone can join Public; Friends+ is for friends and their friends; Friends is for friends only; Invite is for people who were invited.
Muting your mic
Mics pick up the sounds around you easily, so muting while you aren't talking keeps you at ease.
Safety settings
You can change how strangers' avatars appear and how loud they are. Use it when heavy avatars or loud sounds bother you.
Blocking and reporting
If someone bothers you, block them from their profile. After blocking, neither of you can see or hear the other.
Trust rank
Your rank goes up as you play. To upload your own avatars or worlds, you need to reach New User or higher.
Quest and PC
On a Quest by itself, only avatars made for Quest show as they really look. Others show as a stand-in.

Manners

  • Don't touch or get very close to someone you have just met.
  • Read the world's rules, such as a sign by the entrance.
  • Ask the people in a photo before you post it.
  • Keep loud sounds and bright effects down when others are around.
